Porthtowan beach has won both the Blue Flag Award and the Seaside Award run by Keep Britain Tidy.
The prestigious Blue Flag Award acts as a guarantee to everyone that a beach is among the finest not only in the country, but globally. The awards are given to coastal destinations that boast the highest quality of water, facilities, safety, environmental education and management.
The Chairman of Porthtowan Beach Association, John Barrow said: “I am absolutely delighted that we have won these awards as Porthtowan is such a fantastic beach and it is great to see it win national and international recognition. It is absolutely brilliant that the whole community with support from sponsors and in partnership with Cornwall Council has worked together to win this award.”
Keep Britain Tidy’s Coastal Award manager Paul Todd said: ‘It is great to be able to celebrate another fantastic year for the Blue Flag and Seaside Awards. We are delighted that Porthtowan beach has achieved both awards this year. Cornwall’s residents and visitors can be sure, if they visit one of the county’s Blue Flag or Seaside Award winning beaches, that they are visiting one of the best beaches in the world.
Cornwall Council cabinet member for Housing and Environment Joyce Duffin said: “It is fantastic to see what can be achieved when sponsors, local beach champions and the Council work together”
It is hoped that the award will encourage even more people to visit the beach and that local businesses and employment will benefit from the accolade. The association is now working on various other improvements to the beach including looking at disabled access.
